Umbanda comes from a spiritual tradition that has descended from African, Native American and Christian Traditions. Umbanda began almost one hundred years ago in Brazil. Today it includes elements from the Spiritist teachings of Alan Kardec, and eastern religions, such as reincarnation and karma. The rituals of Umbanda include channeling of spirit guides and Deities, as well as Divine magic, worship, and healing. Umbanda only uses fruits, flowers, candles and elements of nature in its ceremonies. It is a totally peaceful religion that looks only to help people, and respects all other religious traditions. The Orixás (pron. orishas) are highly elevated spirits of the forces of nature that rule this planet. The Orixás are universal, and are known by many other names in other cultures.
